The exhibition presents work by eight leading voices shaping contemporary design in Mexico:
Ayres / Comité de Proyectos / Federico Stefanovich / José Bermúdez / Peca / Sebastián Ángeles / Siete Studio / Studio H. Fernández
Together, these studios reflect a diverse segment of Mexico’s design landscape, each with a distinct engagement with material, local craftsmanship, and conceptual practice.
Basalto Collective is pleased to announce its participation in the second edition of Design / Dialogue by Ark Journal during 3daysofdesign with the exhibition native matter, a curated presentation of contemporary design from Mexico that reflects on origin, identity, and transformation through form.
native matter explores the relationship between form, territory, and identity in contemporary design. Through a selection of works, the exhibition examines how memory, materiality, and cultural heritage are embedded in objects and the narratives they carry. Each piece highlights the concept of origin, interpreted both geographically and through its production method. Drawing on ancestral knowledge and contemporary techniques, the works trace the evolution of traditional practices into present-day expressions of utility and form. native matter provides insight into a design culture shaped by craft, materiality, evolving techniques, and conceptual depth—grounded in narrative and cultural reflection.
As part of the exhibition, Basalto Collective will also be presenting new pieces that continue the studio’s investigation into materiality, process, and storytelling. These additions further expand the dialogue between tradition and innovation, offering fresh interpretations rooted in cultural memory and contemporary practice.
